F. Javier Huertas is a Research Scientist at the Andalusian Institute of Earth Sciences (IACT, CSIC-UGR). He has a degree in Chemistry (1987) and Geology (2011), and PhD in Sciences (1991) from the Univ. of Granada. Postdoctoral researcher at the Istituto di Ricerca sulle Argille-CNR (1992-1994) and the Univ. Libre de Bruxelles (1994-1996). Full scientist since 2003. Head of department at EEZ-CSIC and IACT-CSIC (2007-2015) and director of IACT since 2015. Head of the Experimental and Computational Geochemistry Group (RNM264, PAI Junta de Andalucía) since 2005. Recognized 5 sexenios (until 2021) and 6 quinquenios (until 2018).

My 35-year research career has been directed to the study of mineral/solution interaction processes under surface conditions, to unravel the mechanisms of genesis, transformation, and alteration of minerals and to estimate the reaction rates (kinetics). It has been carried out using laboratory experiments and instrumental techniques (XRD, FTIR, SEM-TEM-EDS, non-conventional microscopies). The main scientific-technical contributions include:
- Genesis and transformation of phyllosilicates under natural and laboratory conditions, including hydrothermal synthesis.
- Mechanisms of dissolution and alteration of phyllosilicates.
- Interaction of organic molecules and microorganisms with phyllosilicates.
- Surface reactivity of phyllosilicates through microtopographic techniques and non-conventional microscopies, such as AFM and Hydrothermal-AFM, VSI-PSI interferometry, and LCM-DIM confocal microscopy.
I have published >80 articles in indexed journals, >40 of them Q1 and >40 in international co-authorship (WoK: h=28, >2300 citations; Scopus: h=29, 2500 citations; Google Scholar: h=35, 3760 citations). I have also published a patent (C4.1). I have presented 94 international and 48 national contributions at conferences.
I have participated in 31 competitive projects, 14 as PI (>1 M€), financed by the Spanish national and regional programs, and the EU. I have also participated in 5 research contracts with companies and administrations, highlighting ENRESA in research on the geochemical behavior and safety of the bentonite barrier in high level radioactive waste repositories, to contribute to the design of safe and stable DGR.
I have developed several lines of research throughout my career, all active in the research group I have led since 2005. I have supervised 5 doctoral theses (+1 in progress) and 12 Master Theses. I have participated in the supervision of postdoctoral researchers, graduates, and technicians hired in projects. Since 2007 I have taught in a master’s degree program at the University of Granada. Member of the academic commissions of the UGR of Master (2007-2014) and PhD in Earth Sciences (since 2010). I have taught in specialization courses of Gabinete de Formación-CSIC. Organizer of 1st AIPEA School for Young Scientist “Interstratified clay minerals: Origin, characterization and geochemical significance” (Univ. Bari, Italy).
I have been head of the department (EEZ and IACT, 2007-2015), director of the Andalusian Institute of Earth Sciences (since 2015), and head of my research group since 2005. I have participated in the evaluation of Spanish-AEI projects, Argentina, Israel, EU and evaluation commissions for the Ministry of Universities (national awards Archimedes of Graduate and Master Thesis), Commission AEI, CIEMAT, Acad. Sciences Poland, Univ. Granada.
I have completed two long-term postdoctoral stays (44 months), which have allowed me to implement research lines in the group I coordinate. I have been a visiting researcher (+10 months) in different research centers and universities (CNR, Univ. Sassari, Univ. Bari, Italy; CNRS, Univ. Poitiers, France; Sandia Nat. Lab., USA) and I maintain active international collaborations.
I have participated as an expert in WHO-IARC panels on fibrous particle toxicity, including the development of the Environmental Health Criteria No. 231 of the International Program on Chemical Safety. I have been an associate editor of Clay Mineral since 2007 and Clays & Clay Minerals since 2014. I have served in various positions in the Soc. Española Arcillas from 2005 to present (President 2014-2018), and in the Council of AIPEA (2009-2017). I have participated in the organization of conferences and seminars, highlighting the International Clay Conference and Euroclay (scientific committee 2009 and 2023, and organizing committee 2017). I have also participated in the organization of scientific outreach activities, such as CafeConciencia, Science Week, Geolodía, PIIISA Project.
