The most recent geodetic measurements obtained by UGR researchers with GPS records of millimeter precision show that the Atlas mountain range is shortening 1 millimeter per year from north to south, something that contrasts with its low seismicity. Scientists from the University of Granada (UGR) have warned of the high possibility of aftershocks of the earthquake that occurred in Marrakech on September 8, aftershocks that could last months. The earthquake, the most devastating in the last century in Morocco, had a magnitude of Mw 6.8 and occurred approximately 26 kilometers deep southwest of Marrakech, inside the Atlas Mountains.
